Signs That Indicate Your House Needs Rewiring

Figures from the U.S. Fire Administration show that American fire departments respond to about 26,000 residential electrical fires every year, which are responsible for nearly 300 preventable deaths and more than 1,100 injuries. These incidents also cost more than $1 billion in property damage.

Checking your home’s electrical wiring is one of the best ways to prevent these tragedies from happening but how do you know that your house needs rewiring? Here are some of the signs to watch out for:

Buzzing Noises

Electrical outlets should not produce any buzzing or sizzling sound. If you hear these sounds coming from your outlets, this means that your electric system is about to fail, particularly if the outlets feel hot to the touch or appear charred.

Circuit Breaker Trips Frequently

Circuit breakers are designed to shut off or “trip” when the electrical load is greater than the limit.  A circuit breaker that trips frequently indicates a serious electrical wiring issue.

Power Fluctuations

Flickering lights may not be a big deal when this happens during a thunderstorm but when this consistently occurs and you notice lights flickering several times a day or for extended periods of time, it could mean that you electrical wiring needs servicing.

Burnt Odor

Burnt odors may come from a kitchen disaster but a prolonged and unidentified burnt smell in the house should be investigated, regardless if it is not accompanied by other symptoms. If there are no discolorations on the outlets, it could mean that the problem is with the wiring behind the walls.

Outlet Sparks

Outlets that produce sparks when you plug in or unplug an appliance is another clear indication that your wiring needs to be replaced.

Old Home

The age of your house is another factor that you should consider when assessing the need to rewire. Houses that are more than 40 years old need to have their wiring assessed because the wires may have deteriorated with age, or use aluminum wiring instead of copper wiring, which can increase the odds of fire.

If you see some of these signs in your home, it is important that you contact a professional as soon as possible given the risks posed by faulty wiring.
