Electrical Needs for a Home Office

Home-based businesses are alive and well in today’s economy with some 38 million such businesses in the United States today. When home is your base of operations, you shouldn’t neglect planning an adequate electrical system to ensure it runs efficiently.

Regardless of what type of business is run from your home, it’s almost a guarantee that a computer, either desktop or laptop, and a printer will be basic equipment. Depending on what you use your computer for, your electrical needs may vary greatly. For example, individuals in creative fields such as video game design, animation, or graphic design may require computers that are more powerful and faster to manipulate and store larger digital files. Their work may also call for more than one monitor and a higher-end printer than the typical home office.

If your business requires data storage, you’ll need not only large servers, but a sufficient back-up system to guard against data loss in the event of a power outage. In addition, you may need to install additional air conditioners or change your HVAC controls to keep servers at optimal temperatures.

Don’t forget to take into consideration the need for proper air circulation around high-energy equipment. Electronics can be seriously damaged or destroyed if heat is allowed to build up during use, or even while idle. Keep heat-producing equipment away from curtains and other soft surfaces to prevent fires.

Other professions that require special equipment such as carpentry, photography, ceramics, specialty foods, etc. have unique power needs that would push typical home electricity beyond its maximum capacity. If you plan to convert a garage or enclosed porch into a home office, you may need power sources separate from your living space.
