Choosing An Electrician

When you need an electrician, it’s important to select the right one. Electrical work for your home or business is critical and must be safe and up to local and national codes. Spending the time to research the best electrician for your needs will save time and money. Here are five things to consider when you need an expert.

Licensed and Insured

Find out if the electrician and their company have the proper licensing and are insured. Electricians are required to have current licensure in your state and should keep up-to-date on the latest National Electrical Code (NEC). These codes are updated every three years. These considerations will protect you in case something goes wrong.

There are three classes of electricians: Apprentices, Journeymen, and Master Electricians. Some electricians receive their training via an apprenticeship while others attend a trade school. Ask about the qualifications and experience of the electrician working on your project, and who will do the work. Will the business owner do the work or another technician on their staff? If you have a unique home, such as a Craftsman or one built by a well-known architect, make sure the electrician you choose has experience working on this type of project.

Competitive Pricing

Make sure the prices you’re quoted are competitive and fair. It’s a good idea to get more than one quote. Three quotes will usually suffice. Remember, the cheapest quote isn’t necessarily the best.

Customer Service

Pay attention to the way your requests are answered. When you initially contact an electrician, do you get a prompt response? Are they willing to answer any questions you have and are they courteous in their interactions? If it takes several days before you get a response from an electrician, move on. They will likely have the same practice toward doing your work.

Work Record

Take the time to check the company’s reputation. Even if you get recommendations from someone you know, it’s still a good idea to do your own research. Contact the Better Business Bureau or your local Chamber of Commerce and ask if there are any complaints against the company. Searching the internet may also provide you with feedback from other customers.
